Alert: Therese brings Heavy Rain to Portugal
Will Therese affect Madeira Archipelago?
The low-pressure system will be centered north of the Madeira Archipelago, although it is expected to move slowly southeastward starting late on the 18th (today). Therefore, the will affect Portugal’s (mainland and islands) weather conditions until the 22nd.
Rain Warnings due to Therese
Today, you’ll notice increased cloud cover throughout Madeira Archipelago and Continental Portugal. In the case of Madeira, IPMA predicts hail and thunderstorms. A yellow rain warning was issued for Madeira Islands, Lisboa, Setúbal, Beja and Faro.
Update: Funchal and the majority of municipalities in Madeira Archipelago have now an orange rain warning (this night/early morning more rain is expected – March 19th).

Wind Warnings due to Therese
For March 17th, 18th and 19th, IPMA also issued yellow wind warnings for the following districts/islands:
- Azores (all islands) Update: Now orange warning
- Madeira (orange in mountain regions)
Make sure to follow the recommendations of the authorities. Azores will be particularly affected by the winds, that can reach hurricane values, such as 150 km /h (around 93 miles/hour), or more. Avoid unnecessary trips, and remain at home if possible. There’s a risk that trees, roof tiles, and other objects could be knocked over or blown away by the wind.
Update: Several Flights have been cancelled and some schools are closed in Azores (Pico Island, Madalena Municipality).
Update 2: Porto Santo Island (Madeira Archipelago) was hit by a tornado on March 20th and heavy rain, which resulted in several reported incidents (around 30).
Coastal Events Warnings
Additionally, the following districts of Portugal received a yellow warning for rough seas on March 19th:
- Madeira islands
- Faro
The Azores islands have a more serious warning, the orange warning for rough seas (with the exception of the ocidental group of islands that has a yellow warning).
Avoid going near the sea!

In Summary, apart from the two archipelagos, central and south of Portugal will be the regions most affected by Therese. It will also rain in the Northern Portugal, but but the region will be less affected by the low-pressure system.
