From medieval castles and monasteries to elegant palaces in Portugal, pousadas offer travelers a chance to step back in time while enjoying modern comfort.

These unique hotels are not just places to sleep. They are historic landmarks, architectural treasures, and cultural experiences all in one. In this article, we’ll explore what pousadas are, where to find them, and highlight some of the most notable pousadas in Portugal.

What are Pousadas in Portugal?

Pousadas in Portugal are a group of historic hotels typically located in restored national monuments. It is a way of preserving historical sites, while providing unique experiences to guests. Kind of like the Spanish Paradores… The objective is to showcase local historic buildings and sites.

But what type of historical sites? Well, they can be former convents, castles, palaces and even monasteries! But, don’t worry, you ‘ll have the comfort of the 21st century!

That said, not all of them were originally considered historic buildings. Actually, the first pousadas were “Regional Inns” and their purpose was to offer guests a “rustic comfort” that is, to welcome people with hospitality and in accordance with local culture and cuisine. Eventually, the government (in the 1950s) took the opportunity of renovating monuments and transforming them into historic pousadas.

Do Pousadas in Portugal have restaurants?

Yes, most pousadas in Portugal have on-site restaurants, and dining is often one of the highlights of the stay. These restaurants usually focus on traditional Portuguese cuisine, showcasing regional ingredients and local recipes with a refined touch.

Guests can typically expect dishes with fresh seafood, slow-cooked meats, regional cheeses, soups, and classic desserts. Many restaurants emphasize wine pairings, featuring excellent Portuguese wines from nearby regions.

In some pousadas, the restaurant itself is a historic space, such as a former kitchen or banquet hall. This creates a dining experience that feels both elegant and authentic. While menus may vary, quality is generally high. Do check the restaurant details and reviews before booking.

From the green landscapes of the north to the sunny south, Pousadas can be found in both major destinations and lesser-known cities and towns. Here’s a list of all the official Pousadas in Portugal, which are part of the Pestana Group: website list. The list includes historic and nature-related pousadas.

The map above illustrates some of the Pestana Group’s Pousadas, with the exception of those that exist in the Azores and Madeira.

If you’re looking for a medieval adventure, there are many pousadas in castles. Pousada Castelo Óbidos is one of them, with its beautiful rooms and views. For a quieter stay, look for pousadas like Pousada Castelo Estremoz, located in an area less known by tourists.

Other options not included in the map and website above include:

  • Youth Hostels/ Pousadas (for young adults)

What are Youth Pousadas in Portugal?

For nature lovers and back packers, this is one of the top spots to stay. Youth Pousadas or Pousadas de Juventude are hostels designed with sustainability in mind, and built to provide authentic, learning experiences.

From avid tourists to occasional travelers, from students to teachers, from professionals in various fields to sports associations and charitable institutions, everyone finds their place at Pousadas de Juventude.

Even though its initial purpose was to provide a space for young people to meet, all ages are welcome (below 16 years old, need a guardian permission).

There is information and a Q&A online to learn more about Youth Pousadas in Portugal. In a future article, we may explore these in more detail.

Pousadas in Lisbon Portugal

While Lisbon is known for its vibrant neighborhoods, trams, and viewpoints, it is also home to some remarkable pousadas that offer a quieter, more refined experience within or near the city.

One of the most notable is Pousada de Lisboa, located in the historic Baixa district near Praça do Comércio. This pousada occupies a former kings’ residence and government building that combines neoclassical architecture with contemporary luxury. Its central location makes it ideal for exploring Lisbon’s main attractions while enjoying a calm retreat at the end of the day.

Another option near Lisbon is the Pousada de Queluz, housed in the former royal palace gardens of Queluz, just outside the city. You’ll still be close enough for day trips in Lisbon.

Imagine stepping into a regal atmosphere, surrounded by beautiful gardens and exquisite baroque architecture!

Pousadas in Lisbon Portugal are perfect for travelers who want easy access to the city’s culture, museums, and dining scene without sacrificing comfort or historical charm.

Pousadas in other cities of Portugal

It’s not only Lisbon. There are many hidden gems, in the form of Pousadas, around the country.

For example, during Winter time, Serra da Estrela receives many tourists who are looking to enjoy the snow. You can stay at Serra da Estrela Pousada for a magical Winter Holiday.

On the other hand, you can opt for a relaxing stay at Pousada de Viseu. It is located in the city of Viseu, central area of Portugal. There is a sauna, turkish baths, several pools and massage sessions to release some stress.

If you’re traveling to the South of Portugal, you’ll be able to see the Pousada Palace of Estoi, in Faro. It is a beautiful hotel, mentioned in our list of Best Luxury hotels of Algarve.

There’s also convents transformed into Pousadas. Pousada Convento Beja is one example. The ancient São Francisco Convent, built in the 13th century, was transformed into a hotel, letting people admire its beautiful gardens and architecture.

All that remains of the medieval building is the Sala dos Túmulos (built in the 15th century), an important example of Gothic architecture in Portugal. The cloister is Manueline in style and dates from the 16th century.

Why choose Pousadas in Portugal?

Choosing pousadas in Portugal means choosing an experience rather than just a simple accommodation. These hotels allow travelers to sleep inside history, enjoy regional cuisine, and explore less commercialized locations.

However, some are far from the city center, which can be a downside if you’re planning to go there many times during the week. Also, even if they are slightly more expensive than standard hotels, their value lies in their uniqueness, atmosphere, and cultural significance.

Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a cultural journey, or a slow travel adventure, pousadas offer an unforgettable way to experience Portugal. Have you been to a pousada?
