Next week: Severe heat in Portugal

Summer starts officially on June 21st and the weather seems to know it. Between Sunday and Monday there will be an increase in temperature in most regions of Portugal

Expect extreme heat in Portugal, especially between June 22nd and 24th, and thunderstorms in North, interior region.

Update: According to latest forecasts, the heat wave expected between June 20th to June 24th won’t be as severe as expected! However, temperatures will still be high at the start of the week and thunderstorms may occur on June 21st and 22nd on Vila Real, Viseu, Bragança, Guarda, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre.

Toward the end of the week (June 25th to June 26th) it is expected to rain in some parts of Portugal, accompanied by a slight decrease in temperatures.

Locations with highest temperatures 🥵

All districts in Portugal are expected to see an increase in temperatures starting on Monday, but inland areas, especially the Alentejo region, could exceed 40°C (104°F). However, the latest forecasts now suggest temperatures will remain around 39°C (102°F).

  • Évora can reach 39 º C on Sunday (102ºF)
  • Lisbon may reach 35ºC on Sunday. (94ºF)
  • Porto is predicted to reach 33 ºC (91ºF)
  • Braga may reach 35 ºC on Sunday and Monday (94ºF)
  • Faro can reach 35ºC (94ºF) in some locations, Saturday (June 20th) and Sunday (June21st)

The exception are the Madeira and Azores Islands, which will reach a maximum temperatures of 24ºC or 25 ºC (75 to 77 ºF), and some areas may even register rain showers.

Heat in Portugal will definitely be felt at night. Nights will feel like tropical nights, with temperatures staying around 20ºC to 23ºC (between 68F and 73F), but more on the interior districts of Mainland Portugal.

Recommendations to deal with the heat in Portugal

  • Stay hydrated, drink the recommended water
  • Wear light-weight, white/light colors, and cotton/linen clothes
  • Avoid outdoor sports
  • Avoid alcoholic drinks
  • Avoid direct sun exposure between 11 AM and 5 PM
  • Use sunscreen at least SPF30 (SPF50 better) and reapply every two hours or after being in water
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses outside
  • Contact elderly and vulnerable people regularly (they are the most affected by these heat waves)
  • Take extra care of the most vulnerable groups: children, elderly, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses, and workers exposed to heat.
  • Avoid sunbathing during the critical hours.
  • Close windows and blinds during the day (if possible, or use A.C), especially during peak heat hours
  • Open windows at night

Today, there are some possible thunderstorms in the north, interior area of Portugal, and then the temperature is expected to stay around the 30ºC, and slowly increase to higher temperatures as we approach Summer.
