Madeira Airport has experienced significant disruptions over the past several days, with several flights cancelled, delayed or diverted due to strong winds affecting the International Airport in Santa Cruz, Madeira.

What happened with the Flights to Madeira and those departing from the island

Strong winds in the municipality of Santa Cruz, where Madeira Airport is located, have significantly affected arrivals and departures. Strong wind gusts of 65 km/h were registered.

There were about 9 cancelled flights on June 10th, with other flights cancelled in the previous days. In total, there were at least 70 flights cancelled over these last 4 days.

Affected airlines included several major airlines and routes between Madeira and several destinations across Portugal and Europe.

With that said, some operations and flights to Madeira continued normally. The pilots took advantage of the so-called “open sections”, where wind speeds improve.

Why is Madeira So Vulnerable to Wind?

Madeira Airport is internationally known for its challenging operating conditions, especially landing conditions. The island’s mountainous terrain and coastal location can create sudden changes in wind speed and direction.

Take-offs and landings of flights in Madeira become more difficult with these crosswinds and weather conditions.

Pilots flying to Madeira require additional, mandatory training. This happens when the Airport is considered a Category C airport, and Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport is defined as that. Also, the airport operates under strict wind limitations to ensure passenger safety.

Although these flight disruptions in Madeira can be frustrating, flight diversions and flight cancellations are made as a precaution whenever conditions exceed operational safety limits.

Are flights to Madeira still being affected?

At the time of writing, recent reports indicate that strong winds have continued to affect airport operations. However, weather conditions can change quickly, and the impact on flights may vary throughout the day.

Travelers should consult their airline and Madeira Airport’s official flight information channels for real-time updates.

Travel tips for Visitors Flying to Madeira

  • Check your flight before leaving: confirm your flight status directly with your airline. Airlines may update schedules at short notice, when weather conditions change
  • Allow extra flexibility: If you’re planning onward travel, tours or ferry connections, consider leaving additional time in your itinerary.
  • Keep Essential Items in your Carry-On: if your flight is diverted or cancelled, having medications, chargers, travel documents, and a change of clothes can make the experience more comfortable, especially if your checked luggage has already been loaded into the aircraft and is not immediately accessible.

Despite the recent disruptions, Madeira remains one of Portugal’s most popular destinations, renowned for its dramatic landscapes, levada walks, natural swimming pools, and year-round mild climate.

While weather conditions can occasionally affect flights to Madeira and from the island, these situations are typically managed with passenger safety as the top priority.

Travelers planning to visit the island in the coming days should stay informed, remain flexible with their schedules, and monitor updates from the airline and airport official channels.
