Lisbon Metro Strike on April 9th and 14th

Is the Lisbon Metro Strike really happening?

There’s a big possibility of a Lisbon Metro Strike this Thursday (April 9th) and next Tuesday (April 14th). The Arbitration Court (AT) unanimously decided not to establish minimum services for the workers covered by the strike notice. Therefore, if the decision goes ahead, there will be two 24-hour strikes causing serious inconvenience to subway riders in Lisbon.

Workers at the Lisbon Metro had a general meeting today at 11PM to decide whether to go ahead with a 24-hour strike, which will begin at midnight on Thursday.

Update: This Thursday (April 9th), the strike is already underway. Expect all metro lines to be closed. April 14th still has a possibility of being cancelled (more information as we get closer to the date).

Update 2: This Tuesday (April 14th), the strike was called off following a round of negotiations in which the management presented proposals.

Lisbon metro strike: tips to get around the city smoothly

  1. Stay flexible build buffer time into your itinerary and have backup plans in case routes are crowded or delayed
  2. Avoid peak hours if possible (between 7am and 10AM, and during the evening between 5PM and 8PM)
  3. Plan extra travel time if you need to reach a certain appointment/event (expect delays across the city, especially during rush hours, leave earlier than usual to avoid stress)
  4. Consider walking (if you’re okay walking 20/30 minutes, then walking can be faster than waiting for crowded transport. However, get some good comfortable shoes!)
  5. Book transfers in advance (e.g. to get to or from the airport)
  6. Check real-time updates (e.g.transport operators on social media)
  7. Look for alternative transport solutions (see the link below) note: expect buses from Carris to be fuller than usual due to the strike.

We wish your trip goes well!
