Some news has recently arrived for those who have Portuguese residency cards. According to AIMA, foreign nationals from countries that do not belong to the European Union and who have not yet applied for renewal of their residence permit will only be considered to be in an irregular situation in Portuguese territory in the following situations:
- 6 months counting from October 15, 2025, for cards that expired by June 30, 2025, with the right of residence remaining until April 15, 2026.
- 6 months counting from the expiration date of cards that expired after June 30, 2025.
Foreign citizens who have already started the process of renewing their residence permit with AIMA must bring their expired permit, as well as the “proof receipt” that the renewal application/request has been submitted.
