January 2026 offers a unique opportunity to experience Portugal’s cultural side through some of its most authentic celebrations. These festivals in Portugal bring together tradition, music, and local heritage in vibrant cities like Aveiro and Porto.

This guide highlights two cool festivals taking place in January 2026 that showcase the country’s rich traditions and festive spirit beyond the usual tourist season.

List of Festivals in Portugal this month

Festas in Honour of São Gonçalinho  (Aveiro)

Dates: 8th of January to 12th of January

The Festas in Honour of São Gonçalinho take place every January in Aveiro, offering visitors a unique glimpse into local tradition and community spirit. The celebration is best known for its lively atmosphere and the unusual custom of throwing cavacas (hard sugar biscuits) from the chapel of São Gonçalo to the crowd below. The crowd will then proceed to catch them with what they have, including umbrellas. This is a ritual linked to promises made to the saint. Still hungry? Don’t worry, there will be food stalls serving several regional specialties.

The festival is a memorable winter experience that showcases Aveiro’s cultural identity and warm hospitality. The streets fill with music, folk dancing, and religious processions. By the way, on the 9th, 10th and 12th, there should be fireworks at midnight.

PortDanceFest 2026 – Vila Nova de Gaia (Porto district)

Dates: 24th and 25th of January

Enjoy a festival dedicated to dance in Portugal in the northern city of Vila Nova de Gaia.
PortDanceFest was created to celebrate talent, creativity, and passion for dance. Watch solo dancers and groups compete to win prizes, across a wide range of dance styles.
The festival will be happening in the Pavilhão Desportivo Municipal of Vila Nova de Gaia. Learn more here.

Also, don’t forget the Janeiras celebrations! Across the country, Portuguese communities sing New Year carols and celebrate local culture. These songs are sung door-to-door in Portugal to celebrate the Three Kings’ Day, especially in villages and towns.
