The Triumph of Shostakovitch/Chostakovitch – Concert (Porto)
Date: May 8th
British conductor Alpesh Chauhan OBE, music director of the Birmingham Opera Company, makes his debut at Casa da Música.
He will present Shostakovitch’s Symphony No. 8. It is a unique work as it was written in the summer of 1943, in the midst of World War II. You will notice its somber and desperate tone. It is also one of the Russian composer’s most controversial symphonic works.
Its tone contrasted with the Red Army’s recent successes at the time and, therefore, it was poorly received in the Soviet Union. Shostakovitch reportedly defended himself by saying that the Eighth was “an optimistic work and a hymn to life,” based on the concept that “everything that is dark and gloomy tends to disappear, and beauty ultimately triumphs.”
On the 120th anniversary of the composer’s birth, this is an opportunity to hear one of his most sublime and mysterious works, rarely performed in concert. It is also a commemorative concert celebrating 25 Years Since Porto 2001 – European Capital of Culture.
To learn more about it (and hear) see Casa da Música (concert hall in Porto). The doors usually open 30 minutes before the concert scheduled time.

What to wear to Spring/ May Concerts in Portugal?
If you’re going to a concert in Portugal during the month of May, think of three things: style, comfort, and adapting to unpredictable weather. Spring in Portugal can shift from sunny afternoons to chilly evenings fast, so your outfit should be flexible. This leads to our list of what to wear:
- Effortless & Chic v.s Casual Cool: The way you dress will obviously depend on the type of May concert in Portugal you’re going to. For a classical music concert, opt for slightly more formal clothes and avoid flip-flops or shorts. For a laid-back rock/pop concert, jeans, a nice top, and a jacket could be an option.
- Choose layers: Again, because the weather can change drastically, opt for layers.
- Comfortable shoes: These are key, especially if you’re going to be standing in line or walking to the venue.
Quick do’s and don’ts at a Concert in Portugal
- Arrive early (check what time the doors open and how long it takes to get to the venue. Take in consideration traffic)
- Stay aware of your surroundings (keep an eye on your belongings – pickpocketing can happen in big crowds)
- Don’t talk loudly during performances (especially at more formal/quieter concerts)
- Don’t smoke indoors or in restricted areas
- Don’t bring large bags (security checks can happen, and big bags can be inconvenient)
Have fun at your May Concerts in Portugal!
