As we enter the Summer season, more tourists are heading to Portugal’s beaches, countryside, and nature parks. Portugal’s authorities are warning, however, that the country is entering a critical wildfire period. The hot and dry weather, joined by wind, increase the risk of rural and forest fires in several regions.

Visitors traveling around Portugal this summer are advised to stay informed and take extra precautions, particularly in rural areas and nature parks.

Which areas have wildfire risk alerts

The Civil Protection authorities note that the inland regions are currently under greater attention due to high temperatures and the increased availability of rural and forested areas.

IPMA offers a map with the daily wildfire risk by district and any active restrictions.

Important Restrictions Visitors or Recent Expats Should Know

Several activities may be restricted or prohibited during hot or extreme weather conditions including:

  • Lighting fires in rural and forested areas
  • Barbecuing outside authorized locations
  • Burning garden waste or vegetation
  • Using certain machinery that can create sparks
  • Launching fireworks or sky lanterns

(see the restrictions in more detail, for each district, on the map above)

Anyone who fails to comply with restrictions imposed by authorities may face fines or other penalties. For serious cases, such as intentionally starting a fire, this act is considered a criminal offense and may result in prison sentences.

Travel Tips During Critical Wildfire Period

With the beginning of Summer and wildfire period, tourists visiting Portugal, especially those staying on rural areas or planning on camping near forests, should take some precautions:

  • Check weather forecasts before outdoor activities
  • Follow local safety notices and emergency alerts
  • Carry plenty of water during hikes and sightseeing
  • Avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day
  • Reporting any signs of fire immediately to authorities/emergency services

Travelers should also be prepared for occasional road closures or temporary access restrictions in areas affected by active fires.
